Over 1,000 turn out for Beirut Peacekeeprs Memorial Tower groundbreaking

Once complete in about a year, the 3-story tower will stand 45 feet tall with 241 rods — one for each of the 241 lives lost on Oct. 23, 1983, when a suicide bomber drove a truck into the Marine Corps barracks in Beirut.

The War on Terror for America began on the morning of October 23, 1983. This year will mark the 40th Anniversary of the Beirut Bombing that killed 241 US service men in a single day with a formulated suicide attack. Minutes later a second attack killed 58 French paratroopers. The same terrorist who planned these attacks helped plan September 11, 2001.
